Catechist

A catechist is a layperson, religious, or sometimes a priest or deacon, tasked with educating others in the Catholic faith. Their primary role is to facilitate catechesis, which the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) describes as "an education in the faith… which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted… in an organic and systematic way, with a view to initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life" (CCC 5). Catechesis aims not just to impart knowledge but to foster a living relationship with Jesus Christ and commitment to the Church.

Catechists serve in various settings, including:

  • Parish religious education programs: Teaching children or teens in preparation for sacraments like First Holy Communion, Confirmation, or Baptism.
  • Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Guiding adults or older children who are converting to Catholicism or completing their initiation sacraments.
  • Youth ministry: Engaging young people in faith formation through retreats, Bible studies, or youth groups.
  • Adult faith formation: Leading classes or discussions for adults seeking to deepen their understanding of Catholic teachings.
  • Family catechesis: Supporting parents in their role as the primary educators of their children’s faith.
